(Louis Leblanc)
The regular season has come to an end in the NCAA as the WCHA opens the first round of the playoffs, while the ECAC and CCHA are headed into week two. Louis Leblanc will be in tough against Cornell this weekend, Danny Kristo, and David Fischer will face-off against one another in the opening round of the WCHA playoffs.
ECAC
First round pick, Louis Leblanc picked up two assists in two games helping his team advance to round two in a sweep of Princeton, but will have their hands full this weekend against their biggest Ivy League rivals when they face Cornell (Ryan O'Byrne alumn). Games 1 and 2 are on the road but if Havard can pull one out they will force a game 3 at home on Sunday.
Things came to a quick end to the season for Dartmouth's Joe Stejskal and Dustin Walsh as they were knocked out of the playoffs in a 2-1 series loss to the Bobcats. Each player picked up a goal in the 3 game series, with Stjeskal getting a big late goal in the 3rd period of game 3 to give his team some life after being down 2-0. Overall is was a solid year for the two as Walsh was able to score 8 goals in 20 games in his freshman season while Stejskal had a career high in assists with 7 and in his three seasons in the ECAC he has missed only 2 games.
WCHA
Things will get interesting this weekend as the WCHA opens round 1 of the playoffs, as two high draft picks will face-off in a big series with Danny Kristo and his North Dakota Sioux take on David Fischer and his Minnesota Golden Gophers in what should be a good series for the confernece rivals. Kristo is a key player for the Sioux and has had a great freshman season with 30 points including 13 goals, things haven't been as great for Fischer who could be playing in his last NCAA games, but could be on the way to the AHL to join the Bulldogs as they head towards the playoffs.
Scott Kishel and his UMD Bulldogs will have home ice advantage against Colorado College this weekend. Kishel should dress as he has been a regular for most of the season as the sophmore saw his role increase this year. A series win for UMD could go a long way in helping them reach the Frozen Four tournament, as they are currently ranked 14th overall in the nation, putting them close to the bubble of making it or not.
Patrick Johnson and Wisconsin will go up against AAU (Matt Shasby Alumn) this weekend at home in the best of three series. It has been another tough season for Johnson who after putting up solid numbers in his freshman year, has struggled to produce since, recording identical totals from last season despite Wisconsin having a great as they are ranked 3rd overall in the NCAA currently.
CCHA
Greg Pateryn was held off the scoresheet in Michigan's opening round sweep of LSSU but the good news is that he was able to see time on the 2nd pairing with Brandon Burlon (NJ) and even had the hit of the night in game 2 although he did miss time it slightly which did see him get two minutes for making contact with the knee. This weekend his team will face-off against Michigan State (Andrew Conboy alumn) in what is one of the biggest rivalary's in the college hockey, but will be up against it as they will have to take at least one game on the road in order to force a game 3 on Sunday.
